Tour de Pier is a fundraising outdoor event that brings a five hour indoor fitness activity (stationary cycling) to the Manhattan Beach pier. The South Bay’s best instructors and many celebrity guests attend and give people sessions with energizing music and excitement.
This yearly event is held by an organization dedicated to advancing pancreatic cancer research. This is meant to support pancreatic cancer patients and their families. This year, it took place on Sunday, May 19th.
Last year, the Tour de Pier raised about $1.4 million for three non-profit cancer research and support organizations. They hope to raise even more this year. The funds raised from the event will support the Cancer Support Community South Bay, Hirshberg Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research, and the Uncle Kory Foundation for Brain Cancer Research.
Many people attend this yearly event because they want to support cancer families and patients.
“I believe that it’s inspiring to hear the stories of the different people,” Spanish teacher Elizabeth Laffoon said.
Laffoon loves to participate in this fundraiser because of the fun aspects of this event. “There are performances from local groups, bagpipes, Irish dancing, celebrity riders, and even the coast guard flew over!” Laffoon said. “Although, my favorite part is seeing members of the community all at this event together.”
There are about 10,000 people that participate each year, and Laffoon has been one of them for many years now. “I would encourage people to find a team when riding, and they don’t have to lead it but it really is a great way to give back,” she said. “Even if you are not directly affected by cancer right now, it is still important to be a part of this.”
