Volleyball in Quarantine

Sports are a big part of everyday routines for many students at MBMS. Volleyball, soccer, football, and tennis are just a few of the sports that students play. One popular sport in the South Bay is volleyball. While volleyball is known for being fun and social, there are other benefits to this sport. Especially now during quarantine, volleyball has many mental and physical benefits that everyone can benefit from.

Physical health is important in our daily lives and volleyball is one way to improve it. Volleyball is a perfect sport for improving your physical health so you can have a healthy life and live long. Volleyball can strengthen your arms, shoulders, thighs, and lower leg muscles. Additionally it can help with hand eye coordination and fast reflexes. Playing also burns a surprising 585 calories per forty-five minutes. With all of these health benefits it is no surprise that people enjoy this sport. MBMS 7th grader Danica Blackman says, “Volleyball is my favorite sport because it is so much fun and is a great way to meet new people while exercising.” This is Danica’s second year playing volleyball and she has noticed that her physical health has significantly improved.

Volleyball can improve your physical health, as well as your mental health. Mental health is important in our daily lives, and volleyball is one way to improve it. Volleyball reduces stress, anxiety, depression, and helps build confidence. It is also a great team sport to learn communication skills which can benefit you as an adult. Adults who engage in regular team sports found that team members developed better networking skills then adults who were less involved in team sports. This shows that volleyball can improve many unhealthy mental habits and improve your mental health. MBMS 7th grader Vivi Flechner says, “I started volleyball because it was a team based sport and I wanted to get to know more people.” After Vivi’s first year of playing volleyball she says she has met numerous people and now it is one of her favorite sports. Volleyball can improve your mental health and is a great way to get exercise while having fun.

It can be hard to practice volleyball during quarantine. One way you can practice at home is to hit or serve against a wall. This is a great way to practice and can help with accuracy. Another way you can improve at home is to pass with your friend, sibling, or parent. You can bump back and forth and try to keep a rally. This is a great way to improve in constistiny and control. If you are feeling lazy and do not want to get out of bed, a creative way to practice is to lay on your back and set the ball carefully avoiding lamps or picture frames.

Having healthy mental and physical health is very important in our daily lives. Playing and practicing volleyball is clearly a great way to improve your mental and physical health.
